So this post is mostly just a set of instructions for my wife as she says she needs it written down but it may help some others so here it is. To import a  dvd into itunes with handbrake start by inserting the dvd. This should start the dvd player application if it does not go ahead and open dvd player. What we are trying to identify here is the title that includes the actual movie so go ahead and go thru the menu until the actual move starts. Once the main feature of the movie is playing open the GO -> Title Menu and locate the title number. In the example the title number is one.

Next step open handbrake.

When handbrake opens it should bring up the select source menu.

Select the dvd under devices in the side bar and the VIDEO_TS folder and press open.

Handbrake will now scan for the title number of the dvd and try to pick the correct one. Make sure the title Handbrake selection matches the one determined from DVD Player.

Now select the type of file you would like to make.

In the case of my family we use the devices – universal as we have many of the devices listed and it works well for iTunes.

Now click start and wait for it to finish. This could take some time. After it says its finished drag the file from the desktop into iTunes and you are ready to go.
